Limbo bids wilkommen zu Hause, mein dame, to international star Catriona Shaw, lead singer of Queen Of Japan (electro-pop innovators back in the day), who brings her brand new, solo, Miss le Bomb, show exclusively to Limbo all the way from central Europe’s cultural hub, Berlin.

Wounded Knee brings the noise in support, plus some wacky folk songs he’s written which he performs in a distinctive and extremely sexy baritone, with effects boxes, handclaps, whistles and a kazoo… This guy’s a one-off, we kid you not!

So, this week’s Limbo will be unique (again!), and you know you’re gonna love it, so don’t be shy! There’ll be glamour, glitz and glitter, too. Oh yes, we get all sorts at Limbo, but it just isn’t the same without YOU.

Meursault cancelled 24 hours before show-time, prompting a minor frenzy of activity at Limbo HQ. Singer Neil cried off sick with glandular fever, so best wishes to him for a speedy recovery. We will attempt to re-schedule the show for a date as soon as possible. Watch this space.

Goodbye Lenin valiantly stepped into the breach and did very well in the process, making their Limbo debut earlier than anticipated, sugaring the bitter pill dished out by Shellsuit Massacre. Expect to see them at the club again soon.

Shellsuit Massacre baffled and wowed equally (we love a band that splits the crowd – much like uniformity, unanimity can be so dull) with their mix of techno beats, guitar, reverb and confrontational spoken word performances about ASBOs, kids, society etc. We think you’ll be seeing and hearing a LOT more of them in the future.

And special guest The Face hadn’t slept at all, but managed to remain standing for the entirety of her DJ set and string together some decent records to boot. We’ll be sure to invite her back again at some point, if she can just take charge of her bustling social engagements…

It’s the return of those aces, Isosceles, who impressed everyone at the second ever Limbo. We’ve been dying to have them, their beautiful Hammond organ and all of their fabulous plastic flamingoes back ever since and we’re equally passionate about Come On Gang! who will provide ideal support. Isosceles have been tipped for the top by industry insiders, recently inking a deal with the highly reputable 13 Artists Management company (alongside mega-stars such as Arctic Monkeys, Maximo Park, The Divine Comedy, Sigur Ros, Bloc Party, Kate Nash, Ian Brown, Radiohead, Portishead and Supergrass, among others). Style-wise, they talk about R & B, soul and rockabilly but we’re reminded of classic UK bands such as Madness. This is British pop at its most energetic and entertaining and if Isosceles haven’t made a national dent by the end of the year, we’ll eat our pork pie hats.

Originally from Scotland and formerly the front woman for renegade electro-popstrels Queen of Japan, whose covers of hits such as Kiss’s I Was made For Loving You and Queen’s Cool Cat breathed fresh vitality into these songs some eight years ago – the former becoming a cult hit in its own right. Catriona is le Bomb in more ways than one.

Born and bred in Edinburgh, Miss le Bomb’s career started on graduation from Edinburgh College Of Art in 1997, since which time she has achieved more than just about every other Edinburgh graduate of her generation. Wounded Knee asks: What is folk?

“I guess all songs is folk songs. I never heard no horse sing ‘em.” (Big Bill Broonzy)

The brainchild of Drew Wright, Wounded Knee was born in 2003 and first performed live in 2004, originally more instrumental, experimental electronics, with voice used to varying degrees but over time this has become the core element. WK used to use additional effects pedals but now just a mic, the looping pedal, for building up rhythms and sequencing patterns, and simple percussion or instruments such as kazoo, jew’s harp and moothie.

‘I have loved repetition and minimalism for years,’ says Drew, ‘originally in dance music but more recently in African music and the simple cyclical nature of various folk forms. These days I just have parts and layers in my head all of the time, it has become a really natural part of my day to day life. What has really helped is that my set up is so basic now that it is a really intuitive process to come home and put ideas into action. The majority of musical parts I do with my voice and then I build percussion parts with handclaps and rudimentary bits and bobs: a bicycle bell has been the most recent addition. Limbo is a new weekly night from the Black Spring DJs, located in the emerging zone between a straight-up gig and a club night where people go to DANCE.
It takes place every Thursday at The Voodoo Rooms, Edinburgh from 8pm.

Each week sees some of the most exciting live acts on the circuit and great music for dancing.

Limbo entered the world of The Paranoid Monkeys and saw everything in a brand new, dark, threatening, light, with stand-out track Vultures the crowning glory of an intense set from them. Look out for their new single at the end of the month. Accomplished pros Isa And The Filthy Tongues raised the spectre of rock motifs past and gave them a typically refined seeing to, with their intoxicating combination of psyche, rockabilly and post-punk styles rounded off by singer Stacy Chavis’s own intensity. They’re giving a way a free MP3 on their site every month throughout 2008, so go find.

Having played on the underground electropop circuit for almost seven years, under various spooky guises – as lead singer of Queen of Japan, founding member of infamous Munich-based punk club Club le Bomb and a visual artist who has collaborated with many different musicians and performers over the years including Electronicat, Gerhard Potuznik, Isabel Reiss, Hans Platzgumer, Kamerakino, Bulent Kullukcu and more, she’s da bomb in more ways than one.

Meursault have a penchant for a certain character by French existentialist philosopher and author Albert Camus and mix acoustic instruments such as ukulele, banjo, accordion and guitar with electronics and vocals in a way we’ve not heard much before. You could call it folktronica, although that suggests the likes of Kieren ‘Four Tet’ Hebden and all his stuff is instrumental. You could call it disco folk (Dave probably would) – quite the bastardisation on paper. But, whatever you want to call it, as you can hear from their myspace, Meursault write thoroughly inventive songs that sound utterly modern and are really quite good.

THE FACTS:

‘ShellSuit Massacre are criminals, stealing from the best of high and low culture. The majority of our lyrics/words/text is found poetry taken from a huge variety of sources: tabloids, broadsheets, election leaflets, David Peace, Reader’s Digest book of British Birds, Time For Machetes (book on Rwanda), TS Eliot and so on; we’ve also sampled Steve Reich referencing the Holocaust. In other words, the text is vast in its scope and referencing, which to my mind gives it a lot of depth. Basically, contemporary experimental poetry put to experimental guitar music.

It’s multi media, with subtle and not so subtle details throughout. We use props (bollards, barriers, police tape, a child’s buggy), visuals (some poetry text and some images), sometimes performance art (we had Laura play a schemie chav girl one time), clever use of mobile phones, occasional audience interaction…’ (Nick E Melville)

Rodney Relax and Nick E Melville first met about ten years ago through local scene-zine underword. An old charmer with a skewed but humourous slant on life, Rodney was running the (legendary) Yellow Cafe poetry/art/music/dancing/drinking events around town and Nicky was a bashful young man with a rapier wit and a deadpan delivery, which he occasionally demonstrated to unanimous approval at underword’s events. The two men have been collaborating ever since but this is probably their most ambitious and exciting project yet.

‘The audience stands well back as Shellsuit Massacre take the stage, whether through fear, respect or a distrust of shellsuits on display. The costumes are complemented by hoods, caps and scarves that give the duo a rogue cowboy appearance. The wine in their glasses doesn’t look to be of the tonic variety, but their aggression and spitting fury would suggest so. The beats are grimey, a slow dance of 909 beats, dark basslines and studied synths. It’s grime of the world weary variety with baggy influences creeping in, grime for the fathers of the Scottish capital, not the youth of London. Slogans are despatched like Aidan Moffat with the fire of Public Enemy in his ample belly, spoken passages of asbos, boredom and a reluctance to change a lifestyle that is so maligned in our society. One of the funniest and most animated DJs we’ve met in quite a while, Grace ‘The Face’ has also got excellent taste and a pretty immaculate repertoire when it comes to making the floor burn. Her residency at ECA’s jumping Ampbox Friday nighter continues to go from strength to strength, as the club packs in a full house of hip kids and up-for-it party people every month, with The Grace recently performing warm-up duties for sizzling newcomers such as Black Affair, Shadow Dancer, Christopher D Ashley, Sleepless Crew and the excellent Boy 8 Bit.

	Come On Gang! A guitarist from Galashiels, a bassist from Dublin and a singer/drummer from Brighton, this trio only got together last April but have aleady played gigs all over the capital. We were tipped off about them by the singer’s sister last summer and have been eagerly following their progress and chasing them for a gig ever since. A little bit Belle And Sebastian, a little bit Yeah Yeah Yeahs and a little bit of something else that’s quite simply their own thing, if you’re not feeling these tunes, you’ve either had your soul possessed or you need to see a shrink. 	Kid Canaveral Make indie-pop music you can sing along to. ‘Debut single, Smash Hits (rel. March 2007) contained everything you’d ever want in a pop song – two storytelling verses (replete with mild swear-words) a “He said/She said” chorus, a hand-clapping middle-eight and a po-going guitar solo that is so jauntily infectious, you’ll break your neck after the third listen. Magic. Upon hearing the song BBC Scotland saw fit to make a music video for BBC 2’s The Music Show – which was broadcast on 19th November 2006. Including part-time Japanese member Yoshi, who comes over from Tokyo whenever customs allow, and part-time member Manda Rin (famed for her front-woman role in Bis, who were big in Japan, and Data Panik, who were big in Glasgow, for a bit), Juno! have been doing fantastically well of late, supporting the likes of Operator Please, Glasvegas, Black Affair(ex Beta Band), Robots in Disguise, Kid Carpet (tour support), Matchsticks, Bis, Datapanik and My Latest Novel and getting their debut single produced by Steven from Bis, released by indie legends Shifty Disco records and consequently play-listed on just about every radio station any sane person with any taste in music might want to listen to. Oh yeah, they also ended up on a number of Top Ten Single Of The Year lists in 2007. 	Over The Wall Ben Hillman and Gav Prentice make wonky electronic pop that will make you dance but which belies a punk-rock spirit. The duo made the T Break finals at last year’s TITP and in a glorious act of defiance took the piss out of the sponsor’s product in a video they then posted on youtube and myspace. Unsurprisingly, said sponsor issued the tiny band with a ‘warning’ unless the video was removed from the net so – quite hilariously (and magnificently) – they’ve posted an ‘edited’ version alongside it, in which they’ve dubbed over their own speech with a ‘more positive’ spin in favour of the sponsor’s product. With the public now able to view both videos together, side by side, it’s comedy gold and possibly one of the best examples of sticking it to The Man since Country Joe MacDonald got the Woodstock crowd to shout F-U-C-K before his ode to Uncle Sam in Vietnam, way back in 1970…. Paul Vickers And The Leg demonstrated that the proof was most definitely in the (live) pudding, launching their debut album, Tropical Favourites (SL Records), at Limbo, and showing everybody present how wonderfully deranged and original they are. Then, box-fresh from their recording studio on the west coast, Glaswegian troubadours Bricolage came on, all suitably be-quiffed and check-shirted (actually, not ALL check-shirted but suitably natty no less), to offer us a sneak preview of their new material. Their debut LP is due out via the Memphis Industries label later this year.

Isa describe their sound as post punk / surf / psychobilly and remind us of some our all-time favourite bands and cite the Pixies, Echo And The Bunnymen, Link Wray, Nick Cave and The Kinks as influences – one of the tightest outfits on the circuit, with one of the sexiest and most seductive sounds.

While, one of the most exciting and original new bands in Scotland, The Paranoid Monkeys harness all the rage, fear and confusion of the modern age and distill it into devastatingly visceral rock music, reminding us all at once of Mogwai, Radiohead and a little bit of early Eighties Pink Floyd even, but fundamentally boasting their own, distinctive sound. Just signed by gargantuan independent label Domino and launching their eponymous debut album at Limbo, Correcto is a fantastic new band comprising Danny Saunders (vox), Patrick from The Royal We/Sexy Kids (bass), internationally acclaimed artist Richard Wright (guitar) and Franz Ferdinand’s own Paul Thomson (drums). Inspired by fact, fiction, surrealism and the mundane; and with sounds reminiscent of the Buzzcocks, Kinks, Fall, Ramones, Domino reckons Correcto is “the best art school punk band that we’ve come across for some time.” Well, quite.

THE FACTS:

Recent killer single Joni was penned by Danny before dashing out the door, his brain “still fizzing with Substitute by the Who, guilt and TV show I’m Celebrity Get Me Out Of here (‘I would eat a fish eye, to have you by my side’)” and it’s an instant classic – a direct, unhampered and infectious tune which will have you singing along in no time. Follow-up single Do It Better has proven an even bigger hit so far, with debut album Correcto also winning wide-spread praise.

“Through habit more than anything I have wrote songs for ages, being largely content with playing them live, now and again, here and there. This period of nonchalant activity cumulated in a 7” single on shadazz (Glasgow artist Luke Fowler’s bedroom label). Heartened by confused reviews in the local press including The Paisley Gazette, I began to get serious and expanded the outfit to three with local louches Richard Wright on guitar and Will Bradley playing the drums, (Bradley has since bolted but wisps of silver lining came in the form of Paul Thomson pointing out that he is a drummer, and by god he was right). Later the group was crowned by Patrick of The Royal We fame on bass. The demands of nitty gritty bullshit on this planet acting as a source of endless inspiration and yet an obstacle to negotiate in order to get in the same room for five minutes produced some necessarily direct and unhampered songs which the forthcoming album will demonstrate. (Ok, we are talking Kinks, VU, Eno, Ramones, Creation, Dylan, Smiths, Modern Lovers, PIL, etc here, you know – all the good stuff).

“This is timeless because it could be of any time. Any time between the advent of punk and today, at least… a song made to be listened to on 7-inch. The punkish guitars, new-wave-esque vocals and frenetic pace would ultimately be improved with a few static crackles, the odd skip and a stuck needle at the end. Just as easily as this has come from the back streets of Glasgow, it could have been found in your Dad’s box of old records, nestled somewhere between scratched, dog-eared efforts from PIL and The Skids. The fact that Correcto are what is ultimately deemed a ‘supergroup’ is an irrelevance here. 	The ShellSuit Massacre 2 x performance poets (Rodney Relax + Nick E Melveille) + guitars + electronic music = 21st Century lyrical rock n roll in a world of ASBOs. Rodney Relax and Nick E Melville first met about ten years ago through local scene-zine underword. An old charmer with a skewed but humourous slant on life, Rodney was running the (legendary) Yellow Cafe poetry/art/music/dancing/drinking events around town and Nicky was a bashful young man with a rapier wit and a deadpan delivery, which he occasionally demonstrated to unanimous approval at underword’s events. 	Wounded Knee (Benbecula) Wounded Knee is an experimental musician from Edinburgh, Scotland. He is a happy amateur. He doesn’t want to kill anybody. We first came across him working behind the counter at the now defunct Fopp Records on Cockburn St, but, oh, that was AGES ago and later put him on at one of our Dfrnt Drum nights down at the Cocteau Lounge (Ego) and he was utterly BONKERS but quite interesting. Now signed to the revered Benbecula label, Wounded Knee has refined his idiosyncratic and extraordinary combination of folk songs, strange noises and a kazoo no end and tours it internationally, not least in Berlin, where Scottish ex-pat Ms Shaw now resides and the two have performed together before. 	Isosceles (Art Goes Pop) Played Limbo at only the second night of the club back in November, alongside Retrosexuals, and we’ve been dying to have them, their beautiful Hammond organ and all of their fabulous plastic flamingoes back ever since. They cite R & B, soul and rockabilly on myspace but when they play live there’s a strong mod sensibility and something of a Victorian vaudeville / end-of-the-pier style that’s reminiscent of classic UK bands such as Madness. Skewed geniuses Paul Vickers And The Leg launch their new album, Tropical Favourites (SL Records), at Limbo, before west coast troubadours Bricolage go pop pop pop with a sneak preview of the material from their upcoming LP for the Go Team’s Memphis Industries label.

Limbo is a new weekly night from the Black Spring DJs, located in the emerging zone between a straight-up gig and a club night where people go to DANCE. It takes place every Thursday at The Voodoo Rooms, Edinburgh from 8pm. Each week sees some of the most exciting live acts on the circuit and great music for dancing.

Big love to everyone who scorned Valentine’s Day or dragged their partner to Limbo. The Nanobots put a smile on everyone’s face with their quirky mix of space-age style, guitars and electronics, while the amazing Fay Fife had everybody totally rapt with her smouldering new material and a couple of Revillos classics, Where’s The Boy For Me – which saw her racing to the back of the stage to perform keyboard duties before running forward again to sing the other part of the song (!) – and Crush, before ending her set with a brilliant cover of the Shangri-Las’ classic Remember (Walkin’ In The Sand). The double-whammies keep coming, as Vikisellotape brings her brand new Sellotape outfit to Limbo (including Edinburgh legend Joseph Malik lending vocal support), fresh from a warm-up at the 13th Note last weekend, and super-band Correcto launch their eponymous debut album, due imminently on the ace Domino label (home of Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys, Tour Tet, The Kills, Sons And Daughters and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy among many other stellar types). Roll with the punches, people! The hits are raining down thick and fast!!

Rumoured to be Franz Ferdinand’s favourite band, Bricolage have been known to pack a mighty punch themselves in their delivery of some extremely well coiffed pop, not to mention the most studied, accurate revival of the style of legendary Glasgow indie-popstrels Orange Juice. Now signed to Memphis Industries (the label which introduced the world to the spanking Go Team!) and sporting a slightly new line-up, Bricolage release their own debut later this year and early indicators suggest they’ve developed a whole new twist on that vintage sound.

Glasgow’s Bricolage are Darren Cameron (guitar, vox), Graham Wann (guitar), Chris __ (bass) and Colin Kearney (drums). The band released their first single “Footsteps” on semi-legendary Scottish label Creeping Bent, in June 2006. Second single “Looting Takes The Wanting Out of Waiting” was released by Fantastic Plastic in Feb 07. Both were released in the traditional manner on limited edition 7″ and both sold out immediately. Paul Vickers And The Leg are the front-man from John Peel favourites Dawn Of The Replicants – that’s Paul Vickers – and ex-Khaya/Desc firebrand Dan Mutch, aka The Leg, who has worked with Steve Albini (Nirvana, The Pixies, P.J Harvey). One of Edinburgh’s more eccentric musical offerings, they launch debut album Tropical Favourites (SL Records) at Limbo.

THE FACTS:

SL Records’ latest signing began working together after being asked to record a track to celebrate Edinburgh College of Art’s centenary. The tracks received great acclaim and the band worked on their album over the summer of 2007. Their début single “Chime Chime Cherry” was picked up by Huw Stephens and Vic Galloway on Radio One and their Christmas single “ I Want A Hippopotamus for Christmas” was well received in Oklahoma. Their live show scares and inspires in equal measure, as seen by their show-stopping performance at the SL Records Xmas party.

Paul Vickers:

- Seasoned veteran as the lead singer of “Dawn of the Replicants”, where he occupies the role of central songwriter and frontman, playing his part in creating five albums over a 10 year period.
- Recorded five peel sessions for legendary Radio One DJ John Peel, as well as numerous sessions for everything from Huw Stephens on Radio One, the much missed Greater London Radio, Marc Riley and a live session at Abbey Road Studios. His songs have been playlisted on Xfm and by BBC 6 Music.
- Live credits include Glastonbury, Reading, T In The Park and South by South West in Austin Texas. The Replicants have toured around Britain many times sharing bills with Clinic, Spiritualized and Arab Strap over the years.
- Paul has appeared on T.V. numerous times, on M.T.V’s 120 minutes and Alternative Nation and a guest appearance on Mark Lamar’s ‘Edinburgh Nights’.
- D.O.T.R. notched up three chart hits with the singles “Candlefire” and “Hogwash farm” and the debut album “One head, Two arms, Two legs”.
- Replicant’s records have been released all over the world including Japan, France and Germany. The Replicants were voted best new band in Britain by the Times newspaper, and they’ve enjoyed being single of the week twice in N.M.E, In the Melody Maker and on Mark Radcliffe’s daytime Radio One show.
- Vickers has a back catalogue of over 400 songs and is a tireless workaholic song factory day and night.

The Leg:

- The Leg is the latest project showcasing the song writing talents of chameleon fire breed Dan Mutch. Previous umbrella organizations for
Dan’s talents have included ‘Khaya’ and ‘Desc’.
- The accolades of The Leg/Desc/Khaya include being championed by Steve Lamacq, John Peel and Jo Whiley, recordings two sessions for John Peel and playing live on Radio Scotland and BBC TV.
- As Khaya he recorded three highly acclaimed albums, and as Desc worked on an album with Steve Albini the world famous producer behind seminal recordings by Nirvana, The Pixies and P.J Harvey.
- Dan’s trusted shipmate and fellow Legite cellist Pete Harvey is the only true survivor, apart from Dan, to feature in all three bands. Pete is a
classically trained cellist and at a moment’s notice can perform anything from the marriage of Figaro to West Side Story – in fact that’s

	Isosceles (Art Goes Pop) Played Limbo at only the second night of the club back in November, alongside Retrosexuals, and we’ve been dying to have them, their beautiful Hammond organ and all of their fabulous plastic flamingoes back ever since. Feeling the wrong kind of heat from your hotty this Valentine’s? Busy hunting a new honey? Whether you’re seeking an oasis in the desert of a flawed relationship or hi-octane gas to fire up an entirely new flame, a spell at Limbo will be just the tonic for you this week.

It’s a late starter, opening at 9pm instead of 8, with the first band, Nanobots, on at 10.15. However, for those willing to wait, the headline entertainment will be even more exclusive, as we welcome the finest and most formidable front-woman ever to have emerged from Edinburgh, boasting a brand new band and an entirely new set of songs.

And, if you arrive late, the Black Spring DJs will be casting voodoo magic on the dance floor until 1am.

Limbo is a new weekly night from the Black Spring DJs, located in the emerging zone between a straight-up gig and a club night where people go to DANCE. It takes place every Thursday at The Voodoo Rooms, Edinburgh from 8pm. Each week sees some of the most exciting live acts on the circuit and great music for dancing.

Chutes showed they’ve got the slick production aesthetics to take them all the way to the top and XVECTORS tore the roof off the sucker and reminded us why they’re widely considered one of the best bands in Scotland right now. Rumoured to be Franz Ferdinand’s favourite band, Bricolage have been known to pack a mighty punch in their delivery of the most studied, accurate revival of legendary Glasgow indie-posters Orange Juice. Now signed to the Memphis Industries label (who brought us the spanking Go Team!), they release their debut album later this year and apparently it’s sounding altogether new.

Paul Vickers & The Leg are front-man from John Peel favourites Dawn Of The Replicants – that’s Paul Vickers – and ex-Khaya/Desc fire-brand Dan Mutch, who has worked with Steve Albini (Nirvana, The Pixies, P.J Harvey). One of Edinburgh’s more eccentric musical offerings, they launch debut album Tropical Favourites (SL Records) at Limbo.

The highlight of the club’s lifespan thus far, we present the solo live debut of Fay Fife, front-woman of Edinburgh’s most famous original punks, The Rezillos and their ‘art-pop’ spin-off, The Revillos. A pocket gig by special arrangement, this is a UNIQUE opportunity as Fay brings her own material – too girly for her erstwhile punk outfit – and a new backing band exclusively to Limbo. This is not part of a tour. ‘It’s a bit of an experiment,’ says Fay. But, having already heard some of the material, we guarantee that when Fay Fife Sings Punk Dusty, a lot of people are going to want to hear it.

THE FACTS:

Fay Fife will be well known to anyone who has ever seen a live show by her band, The Rezillos, Edinburgh’s most famous punk outfit, or, for that matter, its ‘arty -pop’ splinter group, The Revillos, both of which she originally fronted from the late Seventies through to the early Eighties.

Over the past 5 years, The Rezillos have gone back on the road (demonstrating that they are still one of the best bands ever to have emerged from Edinburgh). The Rezillos reformed to play a spot on 2002′s Hogmanny show and have now built an enduring cult following in areas such as Brazil, USA and Europe. The band and are now working on new material, and have two compilation albums in the offing. Meanwhile, Fay has been working on a new solo project of her own.

Far too girly (or is that womanly!) for her erstwhile punk group, Fay Fife retains a love of garage band racket (Velvet Underground, Link Wray, Jesus and the Mary Chain etc…) while extolling the virtues of: The Shangri-Las, The Chiffons, Glenn Campbell, Jo Meek, The Beach Boys and Dusty Springfield.

Highlights from Fay Fife’s Musical History

The Rezillos induced a veritable frenzy across the land when they crashed the UK punk scene in 1977. Debut single Can’t Stand My Baby was recorded in a one room attic studio in Edinburgh and released by ‘Sensible’ in 1977. The album Can’t Stand The Rezillos was recorded in New York and released on the Sire label (also behind The Ramones and Talking Heads) in 1978. The Rezillos stand-out tracks/singles include: My Baby Does Good Sculptures, Destination Venus and Flying Saucer Attack. The band also released Top Of The Pops and played it on ‘Top of the Pops.’ Can’t Stand My Baby is still considered one of the best pop singles EVER released and their debut album Can’t Stand The Rezillos remains one of the best LPs recorded by a punk band. Not long after that the band imploded; singer/song-writer Jo Callis left and co-wrote Don’t You Want Me (Baby) as part of the Human League and Fay formed The Revillos with Eugene Reynolds, recording Motorbike Beat, Scuba Scuba and Where’s The Boy For Me?, among others. Fay will perform this latter song as part of her solo set.

Little Known Musical Asides

* The Revillos briefly reformed in the mid 90s mainly to tour in Japan; new recordings were released there including one of Fay’s personal favourites: Crush (obsession with your shoe)
* Also during that period, Fay formed a close musical collaboration with the late guitarist/producer Kid Krupa (AKA Jon McLoughlin). Some of the film soundtrack material they recorded will be played at the upcoming ‘pocket set’ at Limbo (only musical/or Cinema obsessives need to know that the film was the very obscure ”Limits of Thermal Travelling’).
* Fay describes her own musical bones as ‘Punk Dusty’ (in homage to the 60s Diva)
* Fay says of her forthcoming ”Limbo” gig: ”it’ll be a pocket set – about 6 songs, a bit of a musical experiment and perhaps a precursor for something more…..we’ll keep it simple this time – next time it’ll have to be the string section, the distorted tuba and the strange indiscriminate squeaking thing….”

The 14th of February gig will be the first time Fay has performed her own material live. Backed by a five, six or (?) piece band (and well…. who knows!) – it promises to be the highlight of Limbo’s live programme thus far.

	Isa & The Filthy Tongues Featuring members of former indie stars Goodbye Mr Mackenzie, Isa And The Filthy Tongues describe their sound as post punk / surf / psychobilly and remind us of some our all-time favourite bands. 	Sara & The Snakes A blues-rock three-piece who have been electrifying the Edinburgh swamp for some time, with unlikely front-woman Sara Sidewinder unleashing the devil in her (guitar/vox), backed by Andy Anaconda (lead guitar) and Mike Mamba (drums). 	Meursault Meursault have a penchant for a certain character by French existentialist philosopher and author Albert Camus and mix acoustic instruments such as ukulele, banjo, accordion and guitar with electronics and vocals in a way we’ve not heard much before. You could call it folktronica, although that suggests the likes of Kieren ‘Four Tet’ Hebden and all his stuff is instrumental. You could call it disco folk (Dave probably would) – quite the bastardisation on paper. XVECTORS are about to follow up the wide-spread critical acclaim for last year’s single on Optimo’s OSCarr label with their debut album for Mute Records* offshoot Blast First (see below). A recent set at Fast demonstrated all the vim and vigour of their best performances and apparently that was pretty rugged! It’s new wave dance-rock and the kind of music that will set your pulse racing and your feet on fire.

Late 2003: Tired of the dearth of decent bands in the area and itching to get some of their own musical ideas down, four lads from Edinburgh form a band citing extremely diverse influences (see myspace).

2003-2004: xvectors play a series of rapturously received shows at various club nights and venues, including London uber club Our Disco and one of the now-legendary Chateau happenings in Glasgow, stomping ground of Franz Ferdinand and friends.

Early 2005: The band’s debut single comes out on a tiny London-based indie label, featuring the group’s stunning Movies set-closer and a visceral cover of Jamie Principles Chicago house classic, Your Love.

2004-2005: Various xvectors fans tip off Glasgow’s JD Twitch and JG Wilkes of Optimo fame about the band. Eventually they see the band play, love them immediately, book them for Optimo and offer them a deal to release their next record on the club’s nascent label, OSCarr (aka Optimo Singles Club And Related Recordings).

Late 2006: after almost a year of record company squabbling, xvectors are eventually set free to release a new EP, Now Is The Winter Of Our Discotheque on OSCarr. The press are all over it, with the EP getting The Guardian’s record of the week, Mixmag’s Top 100 Releases Of The Year and one of the tracks turning up on Tom Middleton & Fred Deakin’s Face Off mix CD (free with DJ Magazine) among other worthy accolades.

March/April 2007: Famous fans Klaxons invite xvectors to open for them on their first major European tour. The band duly oblige and proceed to play some of the best shows of their lives to ecstatic sold out crowds in Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

Sep 07: Band play Connect festival to rapturous response.

Nov 07: Provide Klaxons tour-support again.

A debut album has recently been finished and is due for release by the legendary Blast First (petite) label, a sub-division of the even more legendary Mute Records, xvectors thus joining the awe-inspiring likes of Sonic Youth, Depeche Mode, Moby, Goldfrapp, Nick Cave, Yazoo, Dinosaur Jnr, Plastikman/Richie Hawtin, Buzzcocks, Cabaret Voltaire, Maps, Suicide, The Slits, Liars and Pan Sonic, among many others.

Following the release last month of their second single, Fear Of Assault (XL/Abeano), Damn Shames are looking set to become Edinburgh’s biggest pop stars since, err… Idlewild! Actually they’ll probably be bigger than that. Fangs are equally exciting. They used to be known as Motorkmark, then they became Fake Fang and now they’ve dropped the Fake and are just known as Fangs. The NME are all over both bands and it’s probably because they both make the kind of electro-punk racket that makes the kidz go WILD. Come see what all the fuss is about before their heads get too big to fit through Limbo’s doorway and Kylie wants to work with them.

And don’t forget the Limbo bar (back room) has an exclusive discount on selected bottled beers (at £2 a pop), so basically this means you can have a great night out for less than a tenner. Oh yes!

Limbo is a new weekly night from the Black Spring DJs, located in the emerging zone between a straight-up gig and a club night where people go to DANCE. It takes place every Thursday at The Voodoo Rooms, Edinburgh from 8pm. Each week sees some of the most exciting live acts on the circuit and great music for dancing.

Those of you who made it down despite the elements will agree that Limbo totally rocked last week. Dancing commenced at 8 p.m. (thanks girls!) and a great crowd was on hand to witness the quirky psyche-pop of Found (Fence), who were a bit like an early Pink Floyd with Dave Gilmour on vocal duties, but totally re-imagined for the twenty-first century, and Jesus H Foxx, with their own unusual strand of lyrical-musical genius: a hugely entertaining night all-round.

We’ve been supporting xvectors since Day 1. Their last single came out on Twitch & Wilkes/Optimo’s OSCarr label and swept the critical board but it’s really all about their live shows. A recent set at Fast demonstrated all the vim and vigour of their best performances and apparently that was pretty rugged! It’s new wave dance-rock and the kind of music that will set your pulse racing and your feet on fire. Newcomers Chutes have got all those attributes too, and then some, with a slightly different sound. ‘An Edinburgh five-piece who mix the cold heart of Editors with the warm guitar melody of Idlewild’ (The Daily Record). Another killer double bill, then. As if that wasn’t enough, the Black Spring DJs will be there to make you DANCE! If you don’t believe us, you’d best come and see for yourself. THE FACTS

Three impeccably degenerate and impossibly well read 19-year olds from Edinburgh.

With their debut single Dancing In The Aisles, released last August by fledgling Edinburgh indie label Golden Eagle, Damn Shames created one of the art-punk singles of 2007 – think The Cribs if they were obsessed with Justice and dripping with early Beastie Boys ‘tood. A Steve Lamacq favourite on the back of this single, Damn Shames have been snapped up by Abeano, a tiny sub-division of London indie giants XL (which effectively makes them label-mates with The Prodigy, Basement Jaxx, The White Stripes, MIA, Devendra Banhart, Dizzee Rascal and Jack Penate, factoid fans!). Oh yes, these kids have a very bright future ahead of them.

Otherworldly electro-popstrel Dollskabeat made her live debut, impressing everybody in the building with her super-cool style and ace tunes, Black International took everyone to another place with their brand of moody new wave (and what a drummer!) and then Foxface engaged with the new folk revolution in their weird, wild menagerie of poetic rock n roll.

Fangs and Damn Shames go head to head in a mighty battle of sexy electro-punk fizzing with the kind of visceral energy that makes all the girls go wild and all the boys green with envy.

Making waves nationally and internationally, following the release of their second album, This Mess We Keep Reshaping, on the inspiring Fence label (King Creosote et al), Found are fast becoming a force to be reckoned with and bring as much of a show with their visuals as with their music when they perform live.

THE FACTS:

IN THE BEGINNING
FOUND first came into existence in 2001 when Ziggy Campbell, Tommy Perman and Kev Sim received funding to release an experimental vinyl record entitled the ‘Random Audio Therapy Unit’.

A MORE MUSICAL DIRECTION
At the beginning of 2005, Ziggy (vox/gtr), Kev (sampler, melodica) and Tommy (bass, synth) started a live band with Gavin Sutherland (keys) and started touring throughout the UK. In February 2006, they added Alan Stockdale (drums), percussion and live visual projections.

Supported electronica luminary Luke Vibert (Warp, Ninja Tune, Lo, Planet Mu) at Triptych05, played on the British Council’s Selector radio show in London, appeared on BBC Scotland’s ‘Radio Cafe’ arts show, played an exclusive live session for Radio Magnetic and had a video special produced for The Music Show (BBC Scotland).

PRSFoundation awarded FOUND the prestigious ‘Live Connections Award’ to stage a one off multi-media event at the Lemon Tree, Aberdeen. The event was a sell-out success with many people turned away at the door.

“rich plays the bass, richie the guitar, neil the drums and michael also plays the guitar. they all play stuff like shakers and glockenspiels and also sing, though michael does most of the singing. i guess you’d call him the singer. at various points in the songs i guess we sound a little like talking heads, pavement, deerhoof, paul simon, yo la tengo, a few ideas from dfa, wilco, silver jews, there’s this one bit that’s supposed to sound like animal collective and, that reminds me, the harmonies on one song are sort of ripped off from panda bear (only nowhere near as good of course), jim o’rourke, richard thompson, there’s a couple of bits that are really influenced by athur russell, but you probably wouldn’t say it sounds like athur russell. i mean, we all like the beach boys, neil young and stuff too and you can probably hear that. maybe a bit of pixies, certainly some early r.e.m., you know, the usual. i’m pretty into jens lekman again, like last summer.” (Jesus H Foxx)
